“I’m Growing Up” : Second latte drunk and hair fabulously coiffed, though, it’s as if someone’s flicked 23-year-old Ashley’s ‘on’ switch. Emerging from her dressing room, doing lunges in a sequined minidress (“Squats are great for your butt,” she explains) while belting out her new single It’s Alright, It’s OK, Sugar almost expects her to burst into a verse of I Want I All. Ashley might have opted for a more serious, rockier sound on her new album Guilty Pleasure, but she’s still got the look-at-me silliness of Sharpay (and the HSM soundtrack on her iPod – yes, we checked!) “People only know me as my character,” she explains, twirling a brown extension round her finger. “So I’ve changed my hair and brought out the edgier me that I’ve never had the chance to express. I’m not trying to run away from HSM, but I’m growing up.”

“I’m Not Sharpay”
Ashley works the camera like a pro, and it’s hardly surprising. Discovered at the age of three by a talent scout in a New Jersey shopping mall, it’s been a life of non-stop performing since. Adverts, musicals, a role in Disney sitcom The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody, then of course, the whole HSM phenomenon. So far Ashley’s banked a cool $9 million from her Disney shenanigans and made history when two of her HSM singles (Bop to the Top and What I’ve Been Looking For) entered the UStop 100 music chart at the same time. But she’s quick to tell us that she’s definitely not a spoilt stage-school-brat. “No, no, noooo!” she squeals.
“I based Sharpay on girls I knew in high school and movies like Mean Girls. But she’s not me, she’s just a part I play. I’m actually more shy and quiet.” Luckily for us, she’s not shy and quiet in front of the camera. Infact, she’s singing and dancing along to her new album.

“My nose job was the hardest thing to deal with”
But there is a softer side of Ashley. In 2007 she had a nose job and insisted it was to repair her ‘deviated septum’ but she still got a lot of grief. “It was one of the worst things I’ve dealt with,” she admits. “I thought talking about it once would make it go away, but it backfired. In this business you try to be honest and they turn things against you.” And she’s no stranger to boy troubles either. “A couple of years ago I had a really hurtful experience. I was seeing a guy in high school and he lied about not being in a relationship. You think you know somebody but then you realise you’ve been making them up in your head the whole time. I was way more naive back then.” But does the new, super-confident Ashley always get the guy? “I had a humongous crush once so I just walked up to the guy and told him.”

“I’m stalked by paps”
Now a regular fixture on the LA paparazzi scene (”They wait outside my house every day and follow me wherever I go,” says Ashley) we mention the scary YouTube vid where Ash and BFF “Nessa” (Hudgens) get swarmed by paps as they grab a MaccyDs. “Some days my mum has to help me get out the house or we’ll just wait inside until they leave. Once I was in my apartment and a photographer managed to break in by following my stylist inside. I freaked out and hid behind the TV. We called the cops but they never caught the guy. It was crazy.” But the paps won’t have any luck scoring pictures of her falling out of nightclubs, Li-Lo-style. “I’ll go out dancing but I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. It’s cool that people can look up to me for who I am.”

“I’m newly single and it hurts”
Halfway through the shoot, Ashley’s ballad Me Without You comes on. Her face drops and she demands we skip the track immediately, her publicist rushing to the iPod. “I just broke up with my boyfriend of two years, Jared (Murillo, a dancer in HSM and member of boy band V Factory). We’re both so busy that we made the decision it wasn’t going to wok out. This is a Jared song…” She trails off, pouting her bottom lip. But Ashley’s obviously not one to wallow- since our shoot.
